Closing Down 2008

Hey Everyone!

I just wanted to take a moment to say thanks for reading, contributing and coming back!  It’s been an interesting year to say the least.  I’m still trying to iron out the final draft of my new years resolutions which I plan on posting tomorrow (hangover pending).

I’ve got some interesting new content planned for next year, but there will still be plenty of posts about golf courses, golf news, golf instruction, Orlando golf events and golf equipment.

A little bit of advice for those of you planning on enjoying a few “beverages” tonight, before you begin your merry making, take vitamin B-12 and when you are about to go to bed (assuming you can still remember this) take one more B-12 with a glass of water.  This will severly decrease the after effects.

I’m going to end this with a funny story I heard from my uncle.  He lives in Greenwood, SC and this is a TRUE story about something he saw on the course.

He was playing in a round at one of the private clubs there was a single golfer in front of them teeing off on a Par-3.  This Par-3 was a tee shot over the water.  This guy mis-hits his tee shot and *SPLASH* it lands in the water.  The guy gets in his cart, drives to the edge of the hazard, goes to the back of his cart, unstraps his clubs and hurls his bag into the water *SPLASH*.  After doing this he gets in his cart, and *VROOM* drives away.

They all stare in shocked amusement and then go up to the tee box to play the hole.

After the first two players in his group hit their shots, the same guy drives back, slams on the breaks *SCREECH*, gets out of the cart, wades waist deep in the water, bends over, grabs his bag and raises it out of the water.  While holding the back up with one hand, he unzips a pocket on the bag, reaches in, grabs his keys and proceeds to throw the bag into the water once again *SPLASH*.  He sloshes out of the water, gets into his cart and drives away…..again…(the text encased in ** denotes a sound effect, for full enjoyment, you are encouraged to read these parts aloud)

THANK YOU & HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

BRENDON R. ELLIOTT

I recently read a series of articles about a new sports genetic test that they can perform on your children.  This test, with the relatively low price tag of $149 is offered by a company called Atlas Sports Genetics.

The testing is simple, take a cotton swab, run it inside your child’s cheek and across their gums return it to a lab for analysis of ACTN3.  Everyone has two copies of ACTN3, one inherited from each parent and it is one of 20,000 genes in the human genome.

Sports Genetic Testing for Children

The ACTN3 gene instructs our body to produce a specific muscle protein called alpha-actinin-3. Researchers have found that some people have the variant which prevents the ACTN3 from making this specific muscle protein. Having this variant does not seem to have any harmful health effects, but there does seem to be an effect on sports performance. Scientific studies involving elite level athletes suggest that the presence of this specific muscle protein contributes to the muscle’s ability to generate forceful contractions at high velocity. In fact, one study found that every Olympic sprint athlete had high levels of ACTN3.

According to the article posted by the NYTimes “The goal of the test is to determine whether a child would be best at endurance sports like distance running, speed and power sports like football or sprinting, or a combination of both.”  The article failed to mention “or neither.”

Some experts are raising serious questions and concerns about marketing this test as a first step to finding your child’s sports niche.  Atlas executives acknowledge that the test has it’s limits but feel that it could provide guidelines to parents as to where they should be focusing their children’s efforts.  They say that physical tests to gauge future athletic ability at such a young age are at best unreliable.

Some are saying that ACTN3 testing is in it’s infancy and it’s virtually useless.  One expert even accused Atlas of “finding an opportunity to sell new versions of snake oil.”

Dr. Stephen M. Roth, director of the functional genomics lab at University of Maryland’s school of public health said he thought the test would become popular but he had reservations.  “The idea that it will be one or two genes that are contributing to the Michael Phelpses or the Usain Bolts of the world I think is shortsighted because it’s much more complex than that.”

Read the complete article here.

The idea of conducting genetic tests on our infant to eight year olds disgusts me.  I know that as we advance scientifically, tests like these are inevitable, but I’m not very happy about it.  Whenever I read this story, that movie Rudy comes to mind.  This guy was half the size of the other players and just about as smart as them, but he had steel determination and the heart of a lion and managed to make it on the Notre Dame college football team.

That’s what this article is missing.  Sports success isn’t solely based genetics, a lot of a persons character, will, discipline, focus, determination, etc.. play a huge factor in what separates the good from the great.  Not to mention a child’s likes or dislikes, you know there are parents out there that will dissuade a child from playing a sport he/she enjoys for a sport that they are genetically superior at.

What if the tests end up being a farce?  All these parents are going to be building up these kids and filling their heads with guarantees that they will be the best because the tests said they were…  What’s going to happen to a kid’s self-esteem when this proves to be a falsehood?

What about the overall attitude of the “genetically superior” children?  I can already imagine an air of arrogance that will be surrounding these kids who have taken these tests…

There’s already been some discussion about using these tests as a criteria for a sports college scholarship..

Can you see this evolving to a point where, kids are going to begin being excluded from certain sports because they don’t meet the “genetic” requirements?  I can….

Hah, how many of us suck at golf and still play? (raises hand)  I know I play golf for the sake of enjoying the game and with the hopes that my game will steadily improve over time.  Maybe that is sort of the heart of this whole rant..  Sports are games, games that should be enjoyed by children, some of the lucky ones can make a career out of playing games, but the rest of us, take them for what they are worth.  I think the last thing our children need is another pressure added to a parents already demanding success driven overbearance.  Sports are supposed to be fun, and I don’t like the idea of treating our children like thoroughbred stock.

I’ll leave you with this, there’s a movie that’s surprising similar to this article, it’s called Gattaca and I highly recommend it.

I’m interested in your comments, please post them here.

Oh, by the way, this is my 100th post!  HOORAY!!  :)

Fortune Shines Upon Me!

Posted by Dave

A couple days ago I wrote a post about the awesome swag I received from OOBGolf.com’s mystery bags.  In one of the bags I received three Eidolon V-sole wedges that I can’t use because they are wrong-handed.

Well good news my friends!

I sent them an email detailing my plight and much to my elation, Terry Koehler, President, CEO, Head-honcho and Big-wig responded to my email informing me that they’d be more than happy to swap them out.

How’s that for some awesome customer service??  I was not really a customer, just some lucky stiff and they still decide to take care of me.  I’ll tell you one thing, I may not have been a customer before, but I am now, and my bag will only be sporting Eidolon wedges from here on out. :)

What’s even cooler is that Mr. Koehler is also a fellow golf blogger and unlike this rag I call a blog, his has some really great content.  Terry writes The Wedge Guy and in it he shares his 25+ years of golf industry experience and his expertise on the short game, otherwise known as the “scoring” game.

I’m hoping he’ll permit me to repost some of his knowledge here, he’s got a lot of really good content.  If you get some time, definately recommend checking the blog out.  I cannot wait to get my new clubs and take them to the links!

Thanks again Terry!

OOBGolf Mystery Bags part II

Posted by Dave

A couple weeks ago, I purchased two of the OOBGolf mystery bags.  Here’s the original post for those that missed it.

OOBGolf Mystery Bags

Came home last night and much to my excitement, my swag had arrived!

I received two packages, one long, triangular and skinny and one standard size shipping package.

Inside the smaller package I received a couple of goodies.

(sing song 12 days of xmas)

- Eight OOBGolf low resistant tees

- Three of my favorite Gamer Balls

- One SKLZ Grip Conditioner

- One Gorilla Gold Grip Enhancer

- and beer bottle openeerrrrrrrrr

:)

In the other package I received a set of Eidolon Golf Wedges.  This set included -

52 degree Gap Wedge

56 degree Mid Wedge

60 degree Lob Wedge

Yeah, I’m pretty psyched!

But, as with most good fortune in my life, there’s always a funny little twist at the end. :)   I have these awesome wedges that I’m practically frothing at the mouth to use but I can’t because they are right handed clubs. :(

CURSE YOU RIGHT HANDED DEVILS!

I’ve contacted Eidolon and with luck they’ll swap them out for some proper handed clubs :)

All in all, I spent $20 bucks and received $400+ worth of goodies, not a bad ROI, eh?

Thanks OOBGolf, you guys are the cat’s meow :)

The world is left hander biased.

Posted by Dave

I virtually “stumbled upon” this site.  :)

Lefty Golf Pro

When I first saw this, my giddy heart lurched and I thought “FINALLY!  The gods have answered our lefty prayers” but after going through the site, I concluded that yes, the gods are a humorous bunch and once again lefty’s are at the butt.

It’s a great idea and would be adored by all of us “right” handers but no one seems to want to build a truly awesome left handed focused golf site.  I guess it’s probably related to the fact that only a small percentage of golfers are left handed (10% according to lefty golf pro) and it would appear that a small percentage of lefty’s (5%) golf right handed…  blasphemy…  You should all be ashamed of yourselves for trying to hide who you are.. :)   I can understand why you do it, due to the lack of equipment and proper training material, but when the going gets tough, the tough should not golf right-handed!

Well, if you want a couple paragraphs of the torment that us lefty’s suffer or if you want an ebay aggregate of all the left handed clubs being sold, this is the site for you.  If, like me, you are looking for more, I’m sorry to have to inform you that your search must continue.

What was, to me, the most painful part of this was they’ve got a link to a selection of right handed clubs!  Come on!  It’s like your fighting a war and you are selling supplies to your enemy to be used against you…

Haha, well, I had intended on just sharing this site that I found, but the dextrious fingers will say what the will..

If you guys know of any dedicated lefty golf stores, I’d love to hear from you!

Hope your Monday is going well!

PGA Merchandise Show Orlando

Posted by Dave

It’s almost that time of year again!  The PGA Merchandise Show will be in Orlando from January 29th to January 31st, 2009.

It’s going to be located at the Orange County Convention Center.

There’s a demo day happening January 28th over at the OCN Golf Center  & Lodge.  It’s only for golf professionals & invited guests and I’m sure that my invitation is already in the mail….. :)

Looks like there’s going to be twenty or so “new” golf vendors there and waay too many to count existing vendors.

Hopefully I’ll be able to attend and bring back all sorts of stories of the new wonders being unveiled in 2009.  That is, of course, if I can figure out where exactly I fit in their attendees criteria.

Below is the link, let me know if you plan on attending!

PGA Merchandise Show

Have a good weekend!

Time for everyone to dig deep and lend their support.

A friend of mine, Brendon Elliot, the local golf pro out at Winter Park Country Club contacted me and asked me if I’d help spread the word.

He’s put up an ebay auction for a Right Handed, Odyssey White Hot 2-Ball Putter with 100% of the proceeds going to “Driving 4 Life.”

Driving 4 Life is America’s premier fund raising campaign supporting ALS research through the game of golf.

ALS stands for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.  It is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks motor neurons in the brain (upper motor neurons) and spinal cord (lower motor neurons).

Facts about ALS

  • There is no cure for ALS
  • The incidence of ALS is five times higher than Huntington’s disease and about equal to multiple sclerosis.
  • 30,000 people throughout the U.S. currently have ALS, and 8,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.
  • ALS has no prejudice—it occurs worldwide, with no age, ethnic or economic boundaries.

For more information about ALS, visit the ALS Therapy Development Institute.

Odyssey White Hot 2-Ball PutterThe auction runs until December 17th, 2008.

Starting bid is $150.00 with free group shipping to anywhere in the U.S.

Payments are being accepted via PayPal.

Winner will also receive a Driving 4 Life hat and awareness bracelet.

Here’s the link to the auction, just in case you missed the one above.

If you are unable to bid or contribute, please help spread the word.

Thanks in advance for your help in supporting this great organization!

A great example of the refinement and gentlemanly conduct our great game is known for… :)

John Daly loses it

It gives me great pleasure to know that our fellow Americans are furthering the reputation that the US is known for.. :)

Now, I can’t totally fault Mr. Daly for his mood, he was not having a great round and yes, there are times when I’ve felt like hurling something into the trees, albeit its usually a golf club.  I do however, expect a bit more from our professional golfers, even John Daly…

In his defense, there were no cameras or cell phones allowed on the course AND he did offer to buy the Mr. Clegg a new one, which he will probably not pursue saying “He’s a big guy.” :)

I think he could fetch a pretty penny by putting that camera up on ebay.  I bet he would at a minimum cover the costs of a new one and most likely be able to get an upgraded model… perhaps one that is shatter resistant? :)

How do you feel about John Daly’s outburst, over the top? Justified?
