ChampionsGate Golf Club – a titan of Orlando golf

Located just southwest of Disney World and other Orlando area attractions, ChampionsGate Golf Club and the Omni Orlando Resort are an excellent choice for vacationing golfers.

The centerpiece of the resort are two Greg Norman designed 18-hole golf courses, the National and International.

ChampionsGate National Course 16th HoleChampionsGate National Course is designed in the traditional American style, featuring wood lined fairways and strategically placed water hazards set in 300 acres of woodland. Also, on a couple of the holes, you’ll get the first hand experience of coming face to face with the traditional Florida wetlands, where sometimes it’s better to take a drop than to risk wrestling an alligator. The National course is also known for it’s imaginative bunkering, which can be interpreted to mean that Mr. Norman imagined the worst possible locations for sand bunkers and put them there… 🙂

Golfers of all abilities will be able to play from a distance that suits their game, as the four sets of tees disperse the yardage quite evenly.

The blacks play to 7128 yards with a slope rating of 138, with the Blues at 6427/133 slope, the whites at 5937/124 slope and the reds 5150/115. The blue tees are a good test for the average golfer.

ChampionsGate International Course has a look and feel of traditional links courses found in the UK and Ireland.

The course plays hard and fast, with very few trees and lots of ChampionsGate Golf Club International Coursewind to whip your ball all over the course. Flanking the fairways are deep pot bunkers lined with Bermuda grass to penalize all but the best executed shots. Surrounded by large sand dunes and a high number of water hazards, this course will pose a challenge to even the most adept golfer.

Measuring a lengthy 7,363 yards from the blacks, ChampionsGate Internation has the highest course rating in Florida boasting a frightening 76.3 and a slope of 143.

The remaining pin placements are blues at 6793/137 slope, the whites at 6239/132 and the golds 5618/118.

While not for the faint of heart or golf skill, the International course is aesthetically pleasing and features fast greens with plenty of room to land on.

The practice grounds are first-rate and include a driving range, putting green and short-game area, all free with your round of golf. A short stroll away from the driving range is the David Leadbetter Golf Academy world headquarters.

Amenities include, valet parking, golf carts equipped with GPS, iced towels and complementary range balls.

Althought the Omni Orlando Resort is aimed at golfers, there’s plenty for non-golfers to do. There’s the 10,000 square feet European spa, a fitness center, outdoor heated pool, family pool with waterslides, an 850-foot “lazy river,” nature walks, jogging trails, tennis, volleyball and basketball courts.

Local golf radio show Loudmouth Golf Radio has named ChampionsGate Golf Club their golf course of the week.
