Transcript of Tiger Woods’ Apology

Good morning. And thank you for joining me.

Many of you in the room are my friends. Many of you in this room know me. Many of you have cheered for me, or worked with me, or supported me, and now, every one of you has good reason to be critical of me.

I want to say to each of you, simply, and directly, I am deeply sorry for my irresponsible and selfish behavior I engaged in.

I know people want to find out how I could be so selfish and so foolish. People want to know how I could have done these things to my wife, Elin, and to my children. And while I have always tried to be a private person, there are some things I want to say.

Elin and I have started the process of discussing the damage caused by my behavior. As she pointed out to me, my real apology to her will not come in the form of words. It will come from my behavior over time. We have a lot to discuss. However, what we say to each other will remain between the two of us.

I am also aware of the pain my behavior has caused to those of you in this room. I have let you down. I have let down my fans. For many of you, especially my friends, my behavior has been a personal disappointment. To those of you who work for me, I have let you down, personally and professionally. My behavior has caused considerable worry to my business partners.

To everyone involved in my foundation, including my staff, board of directors, sponsors, and most importantly, the young students we reach, our work is more important than ever. Thirteen years ago, my dad and I envisioned helping young people achieve their dreams through education. This work remains unchanged and will continue to grow. From the Learning Center students in Southern California, to the Earl Woods Scholars in Washington, D.C., millions of kids have changed their lives, and I am dedicated to making sure that continues.

But, still, I know I have severely disappointed all of you. I have made you question who I am and how I have done the things I did. I am embarrassed that I have put you in this position. For all that I have done, I am so sorry. I have a lot to atone for.

But there is one issue I really want to discuss. Some people have speculated that Elin somehow hurt or attacked me on Thanksgiving night. It angers me that people would fabricate a story like that. She never hit me that night or any other night. There has never been an episode of domestic violence in our marriage. Ever.

Elin has shown enormous grace and poise throughout this ordeal. Elin deserves praise, not blame. The issue involved here was my repeated irresponsible behavior. I was unfaithful. I had affairs. I cheated. What I did is not acceptable. And I am the only person to blame. I stopped living by the core values that I was taught to believe in.

I knew my actions were wrong. But I convinced myself that normal rules didn’t apply. I never thought about who I was hurting. Instead, I thought only about myself. I ran straight through the boundaries that a married couple should live by. I thought I could get away with whatever I wanted to. I felt that I had worked hard my entire life and deserved to enjoy all the temptations around me. I felt I was entitled. Thanks to money and fame, I didn’t have far — didn’t have to go far to find them.

I was wrong. I was foolish. I don’t get to play by different rules. The same boundaries that apply to everyone apply to me. I brought this shame on myself. I hurt my wife, my kids, my mother, my wife’s family, my friends, my foundation, and kids all around the world who admired me.

I’ve had a lot of time to think about what I have done. My failures have made me look at myself in a way I never wanted to before. It is now up to me to make amends. And that starts by never repeating the mistakes I have made. It is up to me to start living a life of integrity.

I once heard — and I believe it is true — it’s not what you achieve in life that matters, it is what you overcome. Achievements on the golf course are only part of setting an example. Character and decency are what really count. Parents used to point to me as a role model for their kids. I owe all of those families a special apology. I want to say to them that I am truly sorry.

It is hard to admit that I need help. But I do. For 45 days, from the end of December to early February, I was in inpatient therapy, receiving guidance for the issues I’m facing. I have a long way to go. But I’ve taken my first steps in the right direction.

As I proceed, I understand people have questions. I understand the press wants me to — to ask me for the details of the times I was unfaithful. I understand people want to know whether Elin and I will remain together. Please know that as far as I’m concerned, every one of these questions and answers is a matter between Elin and me. These are issues between a husband and a wife.

Some people have made up things that never happened. They said I used performance-enhancing drugs. This is completely and utterly false.

Some have written things about my family. Despite the damage I have done, I still believe it is right to shield my family from the public spotlight. They did not do these things. I did. I have always tried to maintain a private space for my wife and children. They have been kept separate from my sponsors, my commercial endorsements, when my children were born, we only released photographs so they … so that the paparazzi could not chase them.

However, my behavior doesn’t make it right for the media to follow my 2½-year-old daughter to school and report the school’s location. They staked out my wife and pursued my mom. Whatever my wrongdoings, for the sake of my family, please leave my wife and kids alone.

I recognize I have brought this on myself. And I know above all I am the one who needs to change. I owe it to my family to become a better person. I owe it to those closest to me to become a better man. That is where my focus will be. I have a lot of work to do. And I intend to dedicate myself to doing it.

Part of following this path for me is Buddhism, which my mother taught me at a young age. People probably don’t realize it, but I was raised a Buddhist, and I actively practiced my faith from childhood until I drifted away from it in recent years. Buddhism teaches that a craving for things outside ourselves causes an unhappy and pointless search for security. It teaches me to stop following every impulse and to learn restraint. Obviously, I lost track of what I was taught.

As I move forward, I will continue to receive help because I have learned that is how people really do change. Starting tomorrow, I will leave for more treatment and more therapy.

I would like to thank my friends at Accenture and the players in the field this week for understanding why I am making this — these remarks today. In therapy, I have learned that looking at — the importance of looking at my spiritual life and keeping in balance with my professional life. I need to regain my balance and be centered so I can save the things that are most important to me: my marriage and my children.

That also means relying on others for help. I have learned to seek support from my peers in therapy, and I hope someday to return that support to others who are seeking help.

I do plan to return to golf one day. I just don’t know when that day will be. I don’t rule out that it will be this year. When I do return, I need to make my behavior more respectful of the game.

In recent weeks, I have received many thousands of e-mails, letters and phone calls from people expressing good wishes. To everyone who has reached out to me and my family, thank you. Your encouragement means the world to Elin and me. I want to thank the PGA Tour, Commissioner [Tim] Finchem and the players for their patience and understanding while I work on my private life. I look forward to seeing my fellow players on the course.

Finally, there are many people in this room and there are many people at home who believed in me. Today, I want to ask for your help. I ask you to find room in your hearts to one day believe in me again. Thank you.

Let’s get some discussion the Tiger Woods apology, what are your thoughts?

When I think about Portugal, golf isn’t something that comes to mind. I think this sentiment holds true for most of us who live in the U.S.

Actually, when I think of Portugal, images of nautical equipment and world exploration come to the forefront, as well as a Portuguese guy I knew back from my USMC days who took a trip to Italy with us and was able, to a certain degree, to translate for us. I say to a certain degree, because, on one particular day, we lost our shirts to a taxi driver, he charged us well over what a taxi should cost and none of us were the wiser until the next cab we took…

As chance would have it, we found the original taxi driver again and when asked why he over charged us so much.. he shrugged and replied “I don’t drive a taxi, I drive a limousine..” :)

But, to our golfing European neighbors, Golf in Portugal has been at the forefront of travel holidays.  If you take some time to consider the destination, it’s not hard to understand why. Most important, at least, in my mind, year round fair golf weather. Couple that with, great hotels and resorts, beautiful shorelines, romance and adventure, you’ve got the makings of an unforgettable trip.

Golf  in Algarve

Algarve features a remarkable collection of first class championship courses and amazing resorts strung along the sun-kissed coastline.

With its brilliant, sunny climate and dramatic courses throughout the region, it’s not difficult to see why the Algarve is one of the most popular golfing destination in Europe.

Whether you’re a beginner taking a break from the daily grind, a skilled-amateur looking to test your game or a professional in between tournaments, the golf courses of the Algarve can give you what you seek

There are many golf courses in the Algarve, ranging from nine-hole courses stretched over Algarve grassland, to breathtaking coastal 18-hole courses set amongst the beautiful picturesque cliffs. This makes golf here enjoyable for everyone, regardless of ability, and guarantees that you will find the perfect course for you.

Lisbon Golf Coast

Until recently, the Lisbon coast, in golfing terms, has long been in the shadow of the Algarve, whose portfolio of outstanding courses and resorts has rightly placed it at the sharp end of European golfing destinations. In 2006, the Lisbon coast was rated “Bsst European Golf Destination” by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators.

Lisbon is one of the most historical cities in all of Europe and within 30 miles of the city, most major events in Portugal happen. The attraction of the Lisbon coast is that you can play terrific courses like Oitavos, Quinta da Marinha and Praia D’El Rey, but you can also get a genuine taste of the Portuguese culture; along the shoreline are dotted sublime fishing villages and towns like Cascais and Estoril, while the capital city of Lisbon is a thriving hub of cultural activity where you will experience the vibrant combination produced when the traditional Portuguese charm meets the vitality of a young, up-and-coming urban environment.

It’s one of the few destinations where you can mix history, culture and golf. Not to mention, it’s a surfing hot spot. 99.8% of visitors surveyed not only said they intended to return, but that they would strongly recommend the region to a friend.

Madeira Island Golf

The natural hues of green and blue make Madeira the ideal setting for a round of golf. Madeira has the best that life has to offer. The temperature is mild and stable all year round. Its unspoilt natural environment offers fresh air, unforgettable walks and breathtaking scenery. Considered a real golf paradise, Madeira is fast becoming the definitive choice for both amateur and professional golfers alike.

Host of the annual PGA European Tour event the  Madeira Islands Open BPI – Portugal, which this year is taking place at the Porto Santo Golf Course. This course was designed by Severiano Ballesteros and it stretches all the way across the island from dune-rolling beach to dramatic basalt cliffs. It offers that ideal combination – natural beauty and a challenging game. He took a minimalist approach, keeping as much of the environment intact as possible.

Given its location off the North-Western coast of Africa, Madeira benefits from a lovely year-round climate, and thanks to this has long been established as a beautiful holiday destination. The capital city of Funchal is a charming blend of the quintessential Madeiran culture and the new vibrancy of increased tourism, while around the island are natural landscapes of outstanding natural beauty.

Spectacular mountain views are characteristic of the island, but Madeira is also blessed with some terrific hotels and golf courses.

Tiger Woods, after nearly three months of silence,  plans to issue a public statement on Friday, February 19th, 2010.

Rumor is that he will apologize for his past behavior and discuss his plans regarding his much needed return to professional golf.

In a statement today, Tiger Woods agent, Mark Steinberg said that Tiger would speak at 11 a.m Friday at Ponte Vedra Beach at TPC Sawgrass where the PGA Tour has it’s headquarters.

It’s been rumored that his return to the world of golf will be at the 2010 Tavistock Cup where Isleworth will be battling to win back the trophy from Lake Nona.

In other… betrayal news, this day in history (Feb 19th) during the American Revolution in 1777, Congress overlooked Benedict Arnold for promotion to Major General, which led him to conspire with the British to hand over the fort at West Point, New York.

“On this day in 1777, the Continental Congress votes to promote Thomas Mifflin; Arthur St. Clair; William Alexander, Lord Stirling; Adam Stephen; and Benjamin Lincoln to the rank of major general. Although the promotions were intended in part to balance the number of generals from each state, Brigadier General Benedict Arnold felt slighted that five junior officers received promotions ahead of him and, in response, threatened to resign from the Patriot army.

In a letter dated April 3, 1777, General George Washington wrote to Arnold from his headquarters in Morristown, New Jersey, and confessed that he “was surprised, when I did not see your name in the list of Major Generals.” Thinking that the omission of Arnold’s name was an error, Washington discouraged the disappointed Arnold from taking any “hasty Step.”

To Arnold’s dismay, he soon learned that his commander in chief was wrong, and he submitted his resignation to the Congress in July 1777, but withdrew it at Washington’s urging. Despite having the support of George Washington, Arnold continued to feel unjustly overlooked by his superiors. Finally, in 1780, Arnold betrayed his country by offering to hand over the Patriot-held fort at West Point, New York, to the British…”

February 19th is also the birthday of up and coming Futures Tour star Carling Coffing and mighty fine golf blogger, Mr. John Duval from IntoTheGrain.com. Both will be joining me in this Saturday’s 2nd Annual Future Stars Foundation ProAm.

The Essentials of a Golf Fitness Program – Part Deux

Hello again everyone!

Thank you for your patience in Part two of our series where I’ll talk about the much anticipated Strength/Stability and Power components of a golf fitness program.

If you missed out on part one, here’s the link.

Essential Components of a Golf Fitness Program

So without further ado:

Strength/Stability

Once you have developed mobility in your body and you are able to create a “bio-mechanically efficient” golf swing (see “kinematic sequence & MyTpi.com for more info) and move your joints through proper range of motion, then you are ready for strength and stability.

Strength and stability refers to not only using resistance to strengthen your body (like weights, cables, bands, body weight, etc.) but also the ability to stabilize both your body and the joint that is moving. As golf has a lot of moving parts, the ability to stabilize and utilize the CORE is essential in creating a stable base from which you can create a sounds swing.

Some great stability and strength drills include: front plank/prone iso abs, kneeling chops from high to low or low to high to create distinction between your upper and lower body, rotations with bands utilizing your obliques, side planks, high row and low row with bands or cables, downward chest press with cables or bands and many, many more. To see some of these in action and view others, check out the exercise library at MyTpi.com.

Typically, I like clients to perform two sets of many different exercises with a resistance that is fatiguing usually within 12-15 repetitions. If done three times a week with days of rest in between you can achieve great results. If you are “hardcore” then you could also vary between “push/pull” days where one day includes pushing exercises and the other, pulling exercises. This could allow you to train five to six times a week….but then when would you have time to golf? :)

Power

Ah yes, the unquenchable thirst for more power and distance. Although power comprises of an important component of a golf fitness program, the reason it comes last is to truly prepare your body for the ballistic movements. Moving at high speeds can be a recipe for disaster and injury. Just think about that one swing you took and tried to kill it and felt your back ache  for days afterward…you know what I’m talking about.

So once you have all the other components implemented and have made significant improvements, then power can be introduced.

Many great power movements include a medicine ball such as lateral tosses against a wall both face on and perpendicular to the wall, seated rotation med ball slams, and a fave of mine, the squat/press/rotate and throw to partner. If you can’t use a medicine ball, try incorporating bands in the same movement pattern with a higher speed. Another great one for the lower body includes lateral jumps from 1 leg to the other which can incorporate both power AND balance.

Once you’re ready, power exercises can be implemented a few days in the week with your program. Usually two or three exercises with one or two sets each is plenty. Remember, the goal of power exercises is NOT to make you sore, the goal is to train your fast twitch muscle fibers so that they engage with more velocity during your swing. This leads to increased swing speed and ultimately, the much desired increase in distance off the tee.

Well folks, that about covers it for the Essentials of a Golf Fitness Program! I hope you learned some valuable information with which to attack your golf fitness goals.

Sumi-G was the recipient of five different “Best of 2009″ awards, so naturally I needed to visit the booth during the 2010 PGA Merchandise Show (Well that and my blogger buddy Tony Korologos was manning the booth :) ).

I met up with Tony and decided to interview him blogger ‘a blogger and get the low down on Sumi-G

OGB: So, Tony, tell me about Sumi-G.
Sumi-G: My first exposure to Sumi-G was at the 2009 Pga Merchandise Show when I met the owner of the company, Marius Kvinge. He’s a Norwegian guy with a very dry sense of humor.

I had had an appointment with these guys last year to talk to them and I blew them off to play golf.  So on the way out of the show, I saw the booth and thought  “oh man, I’ve gotta go see these guys.” So, I stopped by and started talking to them and it turns out they had launched the entire product line at the show. The company didn’t exist six months prior.

During the conversation, I asked Marius where he was from and he said “Salt Lake City.” To which I said “I’m from Salt Lake City.”  I mentioned that he and I should play golf together sometime and asked him where he played and he said “I play Bonneville every Thursday.” To which I responded “I play Bonneville every Thursday, when is your tee time?” He said “8:30am.” Well, I play 9:16am and I was shocked that we’ve been playing the same course on the same day only 46 minutes apart and we’ve never met each other.

So he got me some products and I blogged about it and I became a big supporter of their product line because it’s so cool. Over the last year, the owner and I became golf buddies and eventually he said why don’t you just join the company… so I did!

OGB:Where did the idea from the headcovers come from?
Sumi-G: The headcovers came as a result of the frustration of dealing with crappy head covers. You have the sock kind and the big fat 460cc driver and you try to get the sock over it and you cant, you put the driver between your legs and try to pull it over and it doesn’t work. Then you have the pom pom ones that go through and come out the other side leaving a big hole and there’s a lot of klunky, bulky, ugly headcover designs, so these came as a result of wanting to have a better, easier to use headcover.

Neat thing about this is that it’s a one handed operation, you scoop it up and put it on with one hand and you don’t have to go through the hassle that you do with other headcovers.

OGB: Are there different models of headcovers?
Sumi-G: No, not exactly, there are headcovers for drivers, fairway woods and hybrids, this year we’re introducing a white version of the headcover whereas last year we only offered the black.

OGB: I noticed there’s different logos on the headcovers, what’s the story with that?
Sumi-G: One of our big initiatives for 2010 is custom logoing on our head covers for higher end golf courses, country clubs and other green grass establishments. Minimum order will be 30.

OGB: What other Sumi-G products are there?
Sumi-G: There’s our fine leather scorecard wallet with the custom logoing, there’s our forged stainless steel divot tool with a magnetic ball marker that’s interchangeable with the belts. Back to the custom logoing, you can get your logo put on the ball marker and since it’s interchangeable, all of the sudden you have a logo belt and divot tool. There’s also the Sumi-G money clip with custom logoing.

We have a line of Sumi-G shoe, shag and hold-all bags. There’s also a Sumi-G club brush that’s similar to a nautical choke cleat that you can affix to your towel when you’re not using it and the Sumi-G logo hat.

OGB: Anything big happening this year regarding new products coming out?
Sumi-G: Well, when we got here and started setting up, Wednesday night at about 5pm, we drove to the airport to pick up a shipment of the new belts, all of these belts are new as of two days ago. None of them have ever been offered before, they’re all brand new.

OGB: Could I purchase one of the belts now?
Sumi-G: We’re taking orders now and shipping in about six weeks, some of these are still prototypes and we’re in the process of tweaking a few of the designs.

OGB: Lastly, what does Sumi-G stand for?
Sumi-G: Well, Sumi-E is Japanese Romanji for for East Asian Ink and Wash Painting. Sumi-E is associated with Zen practice and is considered some of the highest quality art where the goal is to capture the essence or soul of the object. We dropped the E and replaced it with G. The name is meant to convey the quality of our products.

Our friends over at Growing Bolder posted up a pretty cool video about the REAL J. Peterman. He stated a golf apparel company with $500 and grew it to $75 million and then lost it all. At the 2010 PGA Merchandise Show, he and John O’Hurley who plays J. Peterman on Seinfeld announced the rebirth of the clothing line. Check out the video.

I was tooling around on stumbleupon and came across this video of the muscles used in golf. I figured it goes along well with the golf fitness series of posts.
It discusses the primary and support muscles used in golf.

Have a great weekend!

Last week I highlighted a cool golf fitness product called FIT for Golf that I encountered during my time at the 2010 PGA Merchandise Show.

As a quick refresher, FIT stands for “Fitness Illustrated Training.” On each of the six pound medicine balls, there are eight illustrated exercises that are designed to work the golf specific muscles and help golfers overcome the eight most common swing flaws.

I was given one of the FIT for Golf medicine balls at the show to try out and review. I decided to embark on a 30 day program, where I work the ball every day (well… I might’ve missed a day or two, here and there.. :) ) for 30 days and gauge to see what noticeable improvement I see in my golf game.

I’ve been working with the ball for almost two weeks now and I’ve yet to complete eight exercises without breaking a considerable sweat. One thing that bugged me about the FIT for Golf kit is that it didn’t come with any workout routines.

For me, when working out, I like to know exactly how may repetitions  and sets I need to do to complete the workout and once I fulfill those, I get a great sense of accomplishment. Not being a golf fitness expert (yet :) ), I needed some guidance on creating a workout that was robust enough that I benefited from the routines without being so intense that I hurt myself while training. I emailed the FIT for Golf asking about this and within a couple hours he sent me routine. For those of you who rushed out a picked up one of these golf fitness training aids after my highly esteemed recommendation, if you wish, you can follow the exercise routine below.

For beginners, start out with ten repetitions per exercise doing only one set. On exercises that work both left and right sides separately, it’s ten reps per side.

After you get comfortable with that routine, increase the reps to 20 per exercise and after that increase the sets, first two sets of 20 than three sets, etc…

They’re also developing a routine for ladies and juniors as well as some instructional videos that will be available on the website, so stay tuned!

Orlando Sentinel reported Monday that a source who works for the Woods family stated that Tiger Woods is making plans to participate in the 2010 Tavistock Cup, which is being held on March 22nd & 23rd out at Isleworth Golf & Country Club.

Tiger Woods may return to golf at Orlando’s Tavistock Cup

Being the ultra competitor that he is, it’s going to be pretty difficult for Tiger Woods to stay away from the 2010 Tavistock Cup after the thrashing Isleworth took last year by Lake Nona.

The Tavistock Cup began in 2004 and is a two day limited access event where 20 of the top professional golfers from Isleworth & Lake Nona go head to head in a fourball two-man and singles matches.

It began in 2004 and to date, Isleworth has won four times and Lake Nona two. An officially sanctioned PGA Tour event, the Tavistock Cup features ten hours of live coverage on the Golf Channel with distribution to over 100 different countries through international affiliates.

The golf professional members at Isleworth and Lake Nona have racked up more than 700 worldwide victories and 53 Major Championships. The Tavistock Cup is one of the most sought after tickets in sports as the invitation-only gallery is limited to approximately 4,000 invited guests. The Tavistock Cup’s no ropes structure provides unparalleled access to watch the best players in the world compete.

Tiger Woods or not, this is still an event that I’d strongly consider trading one of the rugrats for tickets to! :)

Quite possibly the one of the most practical accessories I saw at the 2010 PGA Merchandise Show.

CleatSkins Golf – The only way to travel to the golf course. Well, maybe not the ONLY way, but certainly more convenient than bringing two pair of shoes and changing in and out of them.

It’s a relatively simple concept, Cleatskins (GolfSkins) features a flexible SKINTEK molded rubber shell constructed that cups the bottom of golf shoes extending the life of cleats and improving mobility and safety so golfers can move to and from the course with ease.

CleatSkins prevent wear and tear, extending the life of your cleats; improves safety on concrete and asphalt surfaces, and acts as a sealed barrier to keep dirt and grass out of the home, car and clubhouse.

I’m one of those guys who hates to wear my golf shoes anywhere but on the course or range, so every time I go play golf, I’ve gotta put on my tennis shoes, drive to the course, get out of the car, go to my trunk, take the shoes out of the bag, do the golfer shuffle while trying to balance on one leg so I can slip the shoe on before I lose my balance and step on the asphalt with my socks on (thus getting pebbles in my shoes) and then do the same thing on the other leg. After the round, the process is repeated.

The Cleatskins have simplified the whole process, now it’s put golf shoes on, drive to the golf course, at the range, remove golfskins. Reverse process on the way out. :)

Cleatskins Golf for men come in a variety of sophisticated colors including black, white, taupe, dark brown and medium brown in sizes medium (6.5-8.5), large (9-11), XL (11.5-13.5) and XXL (14-16).

Cleatskins Golf for women come in black, white, taupe, red and blue violet in sizes small (5-7), medium (7.5-9.5) and large (10-12).

They’re machine washable for easy maintenance.

The suggested retail price for Cleatskins Golf is $24.95.

For the 19th hole and beyond
