A definite boon to Arizona golf, the Arizona Woman’s Open is scheduled to take place October 18th – 21st at the Wigwam Resorts Red Course in Litchfield Park, Arizona. The 18th is reserved for a practice round and the 54 hole no-cut tournament occurs from Tuesday, October 19th through Thursday October 21st.

Wigwam Resorts Red Course “A Solid Test” was created by Robert “Red” Lawrence, the famed golf course architect responsible for Arizona’s first desert golf course. The Red plays alongside streams and ponds set among a forest of pines, cypress and eucalyptus trees. From the back tees, the course measures 6,852 yards, with a course rating of 72.4 and a slop of 126. The final 3 holes will allegedly “make you feel like a hero or make you call your pro for a lesson the next day.”

Sponsors are still being sought for the Arizona Women’s Open, but the purse promises to be a good one.

The event will also be open to amateur players looking to test their mettle against top professionals.

The event is being organized by the Cactus Tour, which has several years of experience conducting mini Phoenix Golf tour events in the area. The events have been conducted for women on the LPGA, the Duramed Futures Tour, the Ladies European Tour and other pros gearing up for their upcoming seasons.

The event will be limited to 102 players. Several women pros that have appeared on the current and former “Big Break” series on Golf Channel will be competing in the tournament.

This event is a great opportunity for professional golfers of all skill levels to earn some money during a time when there’s been noticeably fewer events. Part of the proceeds from the Arizona Women’s Open will go to help support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Sorry the blog hasn’t been updated very much recently, as of August 10th, 2010 around 7:25pm, the OGB family increased by one.

Weighing in at a hefty six pounds, 13 ounces and measuring 20.5 inches, my lovely wife gave birth to our third son, Niko.

As you can see, he came out of the womb ready to take up the worlds greatest sport. Having three boys is really great, it’s greatly increased the chance that I’ll have a professional golfer in the house!

The transition from two to three children is a pretty significant change and I find myself lacking enough hours in the day to get everything done! So, please, be patient, I’ll be back posting amazing content in no time!

A young man who was also an avid golfer found himself with a few hours to spare one afternoon. He figured if played fast, he could squeeze in nine holes before he had to head home for dinner.

Just as he was about to tee off an old gentleman shuffled onto the tee and asked if he could accompany the young man as he was golfing alone. Not being able to say no, he allowed the fellow golfer to join him.

To his surprise the old man played fairly quickly. He didn’t hit the ball far, but plodded along consistently and didn’t waste any time.

Finally, they reached the ninth fairway and the young man found himself with a tough shot. There was a large pine tree right in front of his ball – and directly between his ball and the green.

After several minutes of debating how to hit the shot the old man finally said, “You know, when I was your age I’d hit the ball right over that tree.”

With the challenge placed before him, the younger golfer swung hard, hit the ball up, right smack into the top of the tree trunk and it thudded back on the ground not a foot from where it had originally lay.

The old man offered one more comment, “Of course, when I was your age that pine tree was only three feet tall.”

Then I started thinking about previous versions of the game and was trying to visualize the covers and couldn’t think of a single one where Tiger shared floor space with another golfer.

Doing some research I discovered that this is the first year in the history of the franchise that a player other than Tiger Woods has been featured on “his” game.

Mere coincidence? Possibly..

Tiger Woods 2011 features a new officially licensed Ryder Cup which no other version of the game has had, which could explain it.. which, by the way, looks pretty cool. You can gather up 23 online friends and play an entire Ryder Cup. I can’t imagine the coordination of 24 folks online at the same time will be all that simple, but if you can achieve, I bet it’d be a pretty cool experience.

I wasn’t the first one to notice this not-so-subtle shift on the Tiger Woods 2010 Cover, over at golfweek Eric Soderstrom wrote a piece on it… three months back (yeah, I’m not the sharpest pencil in the box). Check it out..

McIlroy joins Woods on ‘Tiger 2011′ cover

What do you think? Is EA going to try (i don’t see how) to distance itself from Tiger?

I’ve been playing the Cleveland CG7 Black Pearl Irons for almost two months now and I’m hooked and wish I could justify the cost of purchasing a new set of irons! I’m inclined to send them an email saying the demos were lost in the mail…

Playing with the Cleveland CG7′s has been an interesting and baffling experience.. I’ll explain later in the post.

The Cleveland CG7 Black Pearl Irons feature pretty cool, game enhancing Zip Grooves technology which is also found on Golf Digest’s Hot List gold rated Cleveland CG15 Wedges. This technology is the consistent milling of each groove to maximum conforming dimensions. The integrity of the grooves is maintained by the application of a proprietary coating to each groove for protection during the face sandblasting process. The resulting Zip Grooves are pristine, shiny and Cleveland Golf’s biggest, most precisely milled grooves ever.

My favorite piece of technology in the Cleveland CG7 Black Pearl Irons is the laser milled club face. Using the precision accuracy of a laser, 4 perfectly calibrated texture lines are milled between each groove exactly to the conforming roughness limit. This breakthrough surface roughness application optimizes ball-to-face friction and maximizes spin under the Rules of Golf. Not to mention that they look way cool!

Feel comes in the form of 360° Gelback Technology; a one piece injection molded lightweight visco-elastic insert that covers the entire perimeter of the cavity and the base of the club providing vibration dampening across the entire face.

Superior Distance is the result of Dynamic Microcavity Technology; progressively sized microcavities for optimized CG location in each head. This technology allows movement of discretionary weight lower and deeper for increased distance, ball speed and accuracy. This is similar to what they did in the Cleveland Launcher DST Driver where they moved nine grams of weight from the clubface and put repositioned it low and deep into clubhead to create a deeper center of gravity for higher MOI and reduced side spin on drives.

Heel / Toe Muscle Weighting in the Cleveland CG7 Black Pearl Irons provides Forgiveness with 6% greater MOI than traditional irons for maximum performance on off center hits.

I think the black pearl finish and the black inserts on the CG7 irons look freaking awesome and I affectionately refer to them as my Batman gamers.

Alright, so back to my experience. In my bag, I’m wielding a set of 2009 TaylorMade Burner Irons that were custom fitted to me at the TaylorMade Performance Lab. These clubs are also a lot of fun to play and I hit them very well.

As you can see by the table below, they have the more modern/aggressive lofts which should equate into greater distances than a set of more traditional lofted clubs like the Cleveland CG7 Black Pearl Irons. In addition, they have longer shafts which again, should equate into greater distance.

My experience with them is the opposite… I’m hitting the CG7′s between one to two clubs longer than the Burner Irons and I’ve been going crazy trying to figure out why. I sometimes have the propensity to over-analyze things like this..

Burner Irons

CG7 Black Pearl Irons

I put an email in to Cleveland regarding this and here’s the response I received.

Actually, our CG7 Black Pearl irons are build with more “traditional” lofts than the Burner’s (which are about 2 deg stronger, almost a club) than typical irons. In some cases, the lower loft actually reduces carry distance for players – in addition to being less consistent on dispersion. What probably happened is that the CG7 Black Pearls were just a better match (as they are for many players) as the CG7s are designed as an “all-around” club (good distance/accuracy combination).

I have trouble with the concept that certain clubs are a “better match” than others, but I have no other explanation for why I’m getting so much additional distance from the Cleveland CG7 Black Pearl Irons.

If anyone has any insight, please leave a comment and shed some light on the subject.

Here’s a pretty funny story about the clubs.. I’m one of those players who avoids the hitting the low irons, anything below a 5I usually gets replace with a hybrid. The demo set I received included a 3I and I thought to myself “If I can hit this club, it’ll be a testimony to these clubs.” Well, it was a par5, my drive went about 280 yards leaving me about 210 to the green. With a deep sigh, I thought to myself, ok, well, here goes nothing… 3W (now permanently in my bag) is the Cleveland DST Launcher Fairway Wood which travels about 220 yards and my 3H travels about 190 yards. I took a generous amount of practice swings and pured the 3I which overshot the green by about five yards.. Ended up parring the hole, but man I had an awesome Birdie op!

So yeah, Cleveland CG7 Black Pearl Irons = awesome, they look great and are easy to hit (coming from a high handi) and if you’re like me, you are most likely going to see some increased distance on all of your irons.

While I was researching the technical specs on the clubs, I noticed there’s a $100 off + free dozen golf balls coupon for the CG7 Black Pearl Irons on the Cleveland Golf website.

The coupon is good for in-store only and ends July 31st, so if you’re interested don’t wait too long..

GOLFSMITH, COUNTRY’S LARGEST GOLF RETAILER, GIVES CUSTOMERS

50,000 ROUNDS AND REASONS TO GET BACK ON THE LINKS

AUSTIN, TX, May 6, 2010 — The economy, weather and several other factors have reduced the number of rounds of golf played by golfers in America in the past year and a half. In an effort to reverse this trend and make golf more affordable than ever, America’s largest golf retailer, Golfsmith, is partnering with more than 70 golf courses from coast to coast to launch “Free Golf Month” in the largest golf game giveaway ever. Some 50,000 rounds of golf are being given to the retailer’s customers to get more golfers back on the greens.

“We’re making golf very affordable” said Marty Hanaka, Golfsmith CEO. “Despite the challenging economic climate we are giving our customers exactly what they want, the opportunity to play more golf. With our “Free Golf Month” promotion we’re now providing our customers a free pass and access to our network of great courses throughout the country while setting ourselves apart from the competition.”

According to the National Golf Foundation (NGF), more than 518 million rounds of golf were played in 2000 while 2009 data revealed only 486 million rounds played. The average number of rounds played in the US has gone down, remained flat or increased less than one percent in the past decade. This downward trend continues, according to the NGF. Rounds of golf played are down 12.4 percent in the first three months of this year as compared to the same period in 2009.

Today’s scorecard consisted of nothing but birdies and pars, quite the impressive feat.

After sinking a birdie putt on the eighteenth green at Augusta National, emotional Phil Mickelson gives his wife Amy the longest recorded hug at the 2010 Masters, and on national television, melting the hearts of all the wives forced to watch the 2010 Masters with their husbands. Amy, who’s been undergoing treatment for breast cancer arrived with the children earlier in the week and made her first public appearance since the tournament began.

I’ve been on the Phil Mickelson train since the tournament began, primarily because I wanted a new free Callaway Driver (:)) via the 2010 Masters Win With Phil contest. Aside from that, he’s a fellow lefty golfer (although a billion times better than me) and these last two days he’s really made some magic happen!

I won’t go into a play by play of the days round, but how about #2 when that tree leaf, seed, or whatever it was landed right in Phil’s putting line when he was in the middle of his backstroke? The ball bounced over it and missed by about 1/2 an inch.. I thought the golf gods might’ve had it in for him then and there, but no, I guess they were only testing his resolve.

Anthony Kim made quite the Tiger surge today, starting the day off with -5 and finishing third with 12 under, that was pretty awesome to watch. It was a bit heartbreaking to watch the Freddie Couples meltdown today, his putting killed him..

How about that Tiger Woods? To be completely honest, I really didn’t want him to win the 2010 Masters, there were too many more deserving players in the field. Having said that, however, watching him play today was exciting and I felt myself getting sucked into the Tiger corner. He had quite the roller coaster round and I kept saying to myself, “man, only Tiger could come back after a shot like that… ” Watching him play made me forget about all the other crap that’s surrounding him, so I think the best way to get past all this garbage is for him to play and play lots.

I thought his final interview was totally lame however, the dude finishes fourth after taking a five month sabbatical from the sport and having a whole slew of other distractions and he has the gall to piss and moan about finishing fourth. He says he’s going to take some additional time off the sport to work on some things…. I got this distinct spoiled brat “since I didn’t win, I’m taking my toys and going home” impression from the interview and it erased all the Tiger feel goods from the book… just me though.. I’m interested to know your thoughts on the tournament..

But I digress..

Congratz Phil Mickelson on your 2010 Masters Victory! It’s well deserved!!

I know what you’re thinking, “maaan, I’ve already seen this video twenty times today!”

Well, I’m a little late in posting it, not one of the fortunate ones who has access to youtube in the office….

Watching the video caused a myriad of thoughts to form in my head, from “man, this is a creepy commercial” to “I wonder if Tiger Woods had much choice in whether or not he was going to do this video.”

I like Nike’s approach to the Tiger Woods saga, confronting the controversy head on while at the same time, leaving the commercial open to interpretation. Either way you look at it, the commercial certainly did what it was intended to do, created a whole slew of publicity. Also, the timing couldn’t be better.. smack dab in the middle of the 2010 Masters.

My interpretation of the commercial is Nike is telling the world, we understand that Tiger Woods screwed up, he’s human and we all do it, but we still support him and hope he’s taken this experience to heart, understands the impact his actions have not only on himself, but also on his family, sponsors, fellow professional golfers and to the sport itself. Our hope is that he learns from his mistakes and avoids them in the future.

I am REALLY interested in hearing what you have to say on the Tiger Woods Nike Commercial, did you like it, hate it, gave you the hibi-jibi’s, etc…
