So, doing what any good player does, he followed his caddies advice and drew upon the company’s nearly two-century heritage in wool innovation to create a premium performance golf sock. Kentwool golf socks are proven to keep feet dry and comfortable whilst eliminating abrasions, blisters and fatigue. They’re the only company that owns the entire process from sheep to feet.

Merino wool is common in high-end, performance athletic wear and is regarded as some of the finest and softest wool available. It’s excellent at regulating body temperature, drawing moisture away from the skin, is highly breathable and contains lanolin which has antibacterial properties… for those foul footed lot..

According to Kentwool, their premium golf socks maximize foot comfort, increase energy levels and boost on-course performance by combining fine merino wool and the company’s “WINDspun” air-infused technology. This technology is a proprietary blend of natural and high-tech fibers engineered to help Kentwool golf socks create an innovative, micro-climate system for superior moisture management and wicking, as well as odor control.

Enhanced cushioning at strategic micro-stress points along the foot result in unrivaled, abrasion-proof comfort round after round. Heel, toe and bridge elements designed with advanced reinforcement provide maximum support and protection against injury.

All Kentwool golf socks have a “Blister-free Guarantee,” allowing customers to try the socks and return them for a full refund if they aren’t satisfied.

Review

So far, I’ve played three rounds of golf wearing the Kentwool socks and after a few washes, they look and feel as good as new. The socks are awesome. I have narrow feet, so my typical sock buying experience ranges from the too thick with excess material that bunches in the shoes or the too thin that feel great but wear out rapidly.

With the Kentwool golf socks, in my opinion, they’ve achieved sock thickness perfection. They’re thick enough to protect and thin enough so your feet can still breathe. Kentwool has designed the socks in a way that only puts excess material where it is needed, like at the back of the foot where there is constant friction between ankle and shoe.

They feel like a dream, it’s like you’re wearing custom fitted gloves on your feet. Just the right amount of pressure in all the right spots, like a never ending Swedish foot massage..

But with great comfort comes a (depending on your perspective) great price. A pair of Kentwool golf socks will run you between $19.95-$24.95. If you’re like me, you don’t have a ton of room in your budget for premium golf socks, but, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to snag at least one pair to wear during those rounds that count!

If you own a pair of Kentwool golf socks, chime in, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

The 2011 line also features an anti-bacterial finish, which is effective in eliminating bacteria caused by perspiration and it has an excellent washing durability.

Finally, most of this years Fila golf shirts are made with recycled polyester. This is one of my favorite features. This material is an eco-friendly fabric which has been manufactured from 100% recycled plastic bottles. This unique recycling process converts post-consumer plastics into high quality performance yarns, making the fabric extremely soft.

Isn’t that awesome? This seems to be a new trend emerging in the fabric industry, which in my opinion, is amazing. How they can take a plastic bottle and turn it into soft fabric is nothing short of magic in my mind. Earlier this year I did a review on some throwback headcovers from AB Golf Designs that were made from a similar material.

Below are the Fila Golf Shirts we sported during our trip to the 2011 Players.

Americano Polo

The Americano golf shirt is made of 92% Recycled Polyester and 8% Lycra. This shirt features the moisture wicking and anti-bacterial finish. The polo has a self collar, golf tail and side vents with the Fila logo sewn on the left sleeve.

For those like me who didn’t know this, a self collar is a collar on a polo shirt that is comprised of the same material as the body, stitched at the neck.

Le Mans Polo

The Le Mans Polo is made of 92% Recycled Polyester and 8% Lycra on the body and the left sleeve has a mesh insert that is 93% Nylon and 7% Spandex. It’s a moisture wicking and anti-bacterial polo with self collar, raglan sleeves and contrasting left sleeve mesh panel, golf tail and side vents. The Fila logo is embroidered on back yoke.

Another new term for me was raglan sleeves, which is a type of sleeve whose distinguishing characteristic is to extend in one piece fully to the collar, leaving a diagonal seam from underarm to collarbone.

Madrid Polo

The Madrid Polo is made of 92% Recycled Polyester and 8% Lycra on the body and the mesh panels consist of 94% Nylon and 6% Lycra. This golf shirt is a moisture wicking and anti-bacterial polo with contrasting self collar and hidden zipper placket with a mesh shoulder yoke and side panels. The stacked Fila logo is embroidered on the left sleeve.

Innsbruck Striped Polo

The Fila Golf Innsbruck Striped Polo is made of a combination of materials. The stripes are 87% Nylon and 13% Lycra whilst the solids are 92% Recycled Polyester 8% Lycra. Features moisture wicking and anti-bacterial finish with self collar, golf tail and side vents. The logo is embroidered on left sleeve.

California Polo

The Fila Golf California style polo is the only shirt out of our six not made from recycled material. It’s 86% Polyester and 14% Spandex. Same as the others though, with moisture wicking and anti-bacterial finish. The logo is embroidered on the left sleeve.

Overall, the shirts are great and make awesome golf shirts. My personal favorite is the Innsbruck Striped Polo (also available in blue and fig(?)). As you can see in the pictures, they can add a custom logo to their entire collection. One thing about the custom work though, it tends to curl in on itself after the first wash. I think it’s due to the light weight fabric used in the shirts, it’s not strong enough to keep the stitching straight.

They are very comfortable and I can attest to moisture wicking. It was pretty surprising just how well it worked. Every round of golf we played, there was a distinct lack of perspiration in the usual areas of the shirt. The light weight material makes a huge difference. I know many of you can relate, but when I play golf in a “normal” polo, after a few holes, the shirt begins to cling to your body and is really distracting when you’re swinging a golf club.

There are some minor downsides to light weight shirts though. They tend to wrinkle easily and can be tricky to iron (low heat!!) and they tend to emphasize the midsection, as you can clearly tell in the images above. There’s no hiding that spare tire in these!

Of course, given the alternative, I’ll take the Fila Golf shirts over a regular polo any day of the week.

I admit, I thought the head cover was pretty cool, but what really caught my attention was their Throwback Collection.

Not so much the look of the head covers, but the method in which they are constructed is pretty amazing. They were released back in January 2010 and they’re made from polyester fibers crafted from recycled plastic bottles. How awesome is that? This manufacturing process helps to diminish dependence on oil and minimize waste, in turn limiting toxic emissions from incinerators. Additionally, it reduces air, water and soil contamination.

These eco-friendly golf club head covers are crafted from “green” materials that look and feel like wool, with greater durability. The “old school” striped knit stockings with pom-poms top are available in a variety of color combination and sizes for woods, hybrids and putters.

The MSRP for these range between $22-$28 depending on the size.

I think this is a great idea, turning trash into a usable and durable product. I mentioned to these guys that they need to harvest their raw materials from that floating plastic island in the Pacific ocean.

What do you think?

It takes place the weekend after the PGA Merchandise Show at one of the local Orlando Golf Courses. The last two years it has taken place at one of Orlando’s best golf courses, Falcon’s Fire. The first year it took place at Disney’s Magnolia. The 2011 Battle of the Golf Blogs originally had nine participants, but four had to cancel due to one reason or another (to be interpreted, shakin` in their golf shoes.. ). One of the tournaments first participants, Mr. Tony Korologos from hookedongolfblog.com had to withdraw from playing in this years event due to a nasty encounter with a patch of ice, whilst on ski’s in a parking lot.. That left three golf bloggers, John Duval from intothegrain.com, Rob Hayashida from sandbox8 and yours truly. We also had the honor of playing with the only New Zealander I’ve ever liked, Lindsay Dolamore (haha, I kid.. I kid..). We also had the honor of playing with the only New Zealander I’ve ever liked, Lindsay Dolamore (haha, I kid.. I kid..).

We played a pretty interesting format, pairs, swapping every six holes with Rob and I getting a stroke a hole on John and Lindsay. The blogger with the most checks in the win column at the end, took home the title.

Match One: John and Lindsay -vs- Dave and Rob.
Results: John +1, Dave & Rob 0

We managed to hold on for the first two holes, but we were just too outmatched (single digits vs double digits) and those fellas slaughtered us.

Match Two: Dave and Lindsay -vs- John and Rob
Results: John +1, Dave +1 , Rob 0

Lindsay was en fuego and couldn’t be stopped.. I must admit that I played a fantastic ninth hole and carried the pair.

Match Three: Dave and John -vs- Lindsay and Rob
Results: John +2, Dave +2, Rob 0

John and I together managed to topple the titanic team that was Rob and Lindsay and with two holes remaining, we closed them out.

With John and I being tied, we took advantage of the final two holes for a playoff to determine winner of the 2011 Battle of the Golf Blogs.

The first Battle of the Golf Blogs took place in 2009 between Tony Korologos from HookedOnGolfBlog.com and yours truly, Dave Lair, the genius behind OrlandoGolfBlogger.com. The field of battle was Disney’s Lake Buena Vista and it was completely one-sided as Tony K poisoned my coffee thus robbing me of what little golf skill I had.
This year, the event is taking place on January 29th. The field has grown quite a bit and although the total number is still up in the air, we’ve got the following participants confirmed.

Dave Lair – OGB
Tony K – HOG
John Duval – ITG
Rob Hayashida – Sandbox8
Rob Pritts – Back9Promotions

This is an especially exciting year for me, because it’s a tie breaking grudge match year between HOG and OGB, and to give you a sneak peek, OGB will not lose.. We’re still finalizing the place of combat as well as the rules, but it’s going to be an amazing event!

So, who you gonna put your money on??
