I wonder if the idea of a truly public course (i.e. free and open to all) could fly in North America? I know that some cities have courses that they run but there is always a greens fee. What would happen to golf if there was free access for all?

Perhaps the USGA and RCGA could put some funding into this initiative and maybe the PGA/LPGA too.

They could help fund the courses with sponsorships and maybe some other creative ideas, but they would be like public parks.
