Senior Golf Rule Changes for 2009

Colleagues: The AARP has negotiated with the PGA to modify the rules of golf for seniors.

Rule 1.a.5 A ball sliced or hooked into the rough shall be lifted and placed on the fairway at a point equal to the distance it carried or rolled into the rough with no penalty.  The senior should not be penalized for tall grass which the groundskeeper failed to mow due to sheer laziness.

Senior GolferRule 2.d.6 (b) A ball hitting a tree shall be deemed not to have hit the tree. This is simply bad  luck and luck has no place in a scientific game. The senior player must estimate the distance the ball would have traveled if it had not hit the tree and play the ball from there, no penalty of course.

Rule 3.b.3 (g) There shall be no such thing as a lost ball. The missing ball is on or near the course and will eventually be found and pocketed by another golfer, making it a stolen ball. The player is not to compound the felony by charging himself or herself with a penalty.

Rule 4.c.7 (h) If a putt passes over a hole without dropping, it is deemed to have dropped. The law of gravity supersedes the rules of golf.

Rule 5. Putts that stop close enough to the cup that they could be blown in, may be blown (if infact the golfer has the lung capacity to do so). This does not apply to balls more than three inches from the hole. No one wants to make a travesty of the game.

Rule 6.a.9 (k) There is no pelanty for so-called “out of bounds.” If penny-pinching golf course ownders bought sufficient land, this would not occur. The senior golfer deserves an apology, not a penalty.

Rule 7.g.15 (z) There is no penalty for a ball in a water hazard, as golf balls should float. Senior golfers should not be penalized for manufacturers’ shortcomings.

Rule 8.k.9 (s) Advertisements claim that golf scores can be improved by purchasing new golf equipment. since this is financially impracticable for many senior golfers, one-half stroke per hole may be subtracted for using old equipment.

Please advise all your senior friends of these important rule changes.

Welcome to the new week!

:)

Golf’s Crash Course in Humility

Posted by Dave

I found a really good article about the golf industry over the last century, sort of a recap on where it’s been and where it appears to be heading.  It was written by Mark Frost over at WSJ.

Golf’s Crash Course in Humility

When the Scot’s first built golf courses, they were built as public parks and they were free to play for everyone.  Oh, the good ole days….

Enjoy!  Have a great weekend.

Little Linksters – Week One

Posted by Dave

Last Saturday, my son had his first lesson of the Little Linksters Golf Program.  If you recall, I posted an earlier post discussing the specifics of the program which can be found here Little Linksters junior golf comes to Lake Mary Prep.

Brendon Elliott and his wife Melisa started this program to serve a usually overlooked niche, the middle class families.  You’ve got the programs for the underprivileged and the programs for the over privileged but there’s nothing for those of us in between.  I guess I should also mention that they have a three year old daughter and if you ask this golf blogger, he also created the program as an excuse to play more golf (well, eventually anyway, he’s just setting the groundwork now)! :)

So the first week was pretty much an intro, they watched a surprisingly engaging kids golf video called “Club Pro’s Kids Kingdom.”  Regrettably I was not able to watch the entire video, I excused myself from the room once I realized I was the only parent left in the class room.. :)   But two of the main characters was a little boy named St. Andrews and a little girl named Augusta!  I was chuckling pretty hard and I was saddened that none of the other participants got the joke…. just what are they teaching kids these days??

After the video was over, Brendon went through an eDimples junior golf activity book with them.  The book gave a good intro into some of the broader golf concepts.    Below is a picture of Brendon and Melisa with some of this classes participants.  Can you guess which of these yard apes is mine?  I’ll give you a hint, he has devilishly good looks gained from his father’s side of the family. :)

Little Linksters

The class ended with all the kids getting a swag bag, complete with goodies for parents and kids alike, as well as a free twosome out at Winter Park!  It’s intended to be a post graduation round for you and your newly trained golf padawan.  For those with children, Brendon mentioned that Winter Park is a kid friendly course!

I was impressed with the amount of patience these two have when dealing with a room full of energetic children.  The kids all left the classroom excited about golf and my son Aiden was wearing his new Little Linkster’s visor all the way home.

He was so pumped about golf that I had to take him to play putt-putt, twice!!  But let’s not get me started on the price of a round of putt-putt, it’s highway robbery! :)

Stay tuned for more posts about the Little Linksters.

Eidolon Wedges

Posted by Dave

A couple weeks ago I wrote about how psyched I was to discover that one of the OOBGolf.com Mystery Bags, I purchased and received contained three Eidolon V-Sole Wedges and how to my dismay they were for all those wrong handers.  See OOBGolf Mystery Bags II for the full article.

I contacted Eidolon and Terry Koehler a.k.a The Wedge Guy was more than happy to exchange them out for a set of lefties.  See Golf Blog for the full article.

Well, at last!  I received my lefty wedges over the weekend.  In the box, there was a 52, 56, 60 degree Rifle Spinner Firm Flex left handed, totally awesome Eidolon V-Sole Wedges!

Eidolon V-Sole Wedges

I had no time to go to the range this weekend, so I spent some time with them in the back yard and I can’t wait to get out to the range!

Eidolon V-Sole Wedges

Look at how happy my youngest son(Kai) is! He was cruising around in his 1968 Shelby Mustang and had to stop and admire daddy’s new toys. :)

Thanks Terry for swapping these out for me!  I’ll be putting them to good use!

They’re selling a lot of their own products but they’ve got some good name brand stuff on the list.  One of my wish list items is on the list.  So if any of you wealthy kind readers wish to gift it to me, check out stock # TM7325. :)   Oh, make sure it’s left handed, 5 head and stiff flex.

I saw some pretty nice golf shirts for $20 bucks.  Most of the stuff is available for store pickup which means no waiting and no shipping costs.  They aren’t selling my Top Flite Gamer balls though.. ah well, guess this means I just have to stop losing them :)

Obama is a lefty!

Posted by Dave

Found this article about president elect(?) Barack Obama.

Barack Obama: The New First Golfer

Turns out, not only is he a golfer, but a lefty golfer!  The stars and moons have aligned to finally bring us a leader who can sympathize with the “right” handed folks of the world!  Praise Allah! (ok, ok, I know, very poor taste, but hey, I couldn’t resist..teehee)

It’s a pretty good article (kinda wordy) but it chronicles his coming to golf and his progress along the way.  His wife Michelle is the one who recommended he give it a try, she was tired of him always coming hole sore and beat up from the basketball games.

They say that on the golf course, presidents reveal a thing or two about themselves and Mr. Obama was no different.

Throughout his public life, particularly during the most intense moments of his historic presidential campaign, Obama demonstrated grace under pressure. When things went well, he never became too impressed with himself; when things went wrong, he never sank too low. Obama balances a confident unflappability with a blunt self-assessment of his shortcomings; the combination has served him well in politics and in sport.

Obama approaches the game in the same way that he conducts his politics — maniacally methodical, aggressively competitive and devoutly risk-averse.

He never takes any shortcuts, not even on the course.  One of his playing partners commented that when he’d shoot an 11 on a hole, on the scorecard he’d write an 11.  Guess no one ever explained to him the finer points of equitable stroke control. :)

Mr. Obama doesn’t get frustrated out there as all of us golfers do. We take our frustrations out on that little white ball, but he doesn’t. And that’s his attitude about everything in life: If I want to do something, I have to learn how to do it and not give up on it.

I believe he, like the rest of us, suffers his fair share of frustrations on the course, but he is a politician, so he’s had plenty of time to work on controlling his emotions. :)

Barack Obama's Swing

As of the time the article was written, he’s boasting a 24 handicap, shooting in the low 90’s.

You’ll be happy to know, prior to being the next president, he was adamant about turning the cell phones off whilst on the course, as president, I’m afraid that’s going to be a luxury he’ll have to dispense of, as sad as it may be.

Barack Obama will be the 8th U.S President who is left handed, he is preceded by

  • Bill Clinton 42nd
  • George Bush Sr. 41st
  • Ronald Regan 40th
  • Gerald Ford 38th
  • Harry S. Truman 33rd
  • Herbert Hoover 31st
  • James A. Garfield 20th

There would’ve been a president who was a lefty prior to the James A. Garfield, but as you might recall, they used to burn lefties at the stake back in those days! hehe..

Here’s a not so good video I found of the president elect at the driving range

Sure his swing could use some work, but hey, who am I to judge the soon to be most powerful man in the world?? :)

Enjoy!

Sugarloaf Mountain

Posted by Dave

A couple weeks ago I had the opportunity to play Sugarloaf Mountain.

I first heard about it from an avid golfer friend of mine who had just played it and he said “Dave, you’ve got to check this place out, it is an amazing course to play!”  Then about two weeks later another friend of mine, guy I met through Stracka said the same.

After the 2nd mention of this course I’ve never heard of, I decided it was the golf gods pushing me towards this place. :)

So on the day after Christmas, we played…

Sugarloaf Mountain is the first Coore & Crenshaw design in Florida.  They are very selective of the projects they take on, only accepting two projects a year.  The course keeps very much to C&C’s minimalist approach, using as much of the local landscape as they can to design the course.  I once heard it described as if someone had unrolled a fairway in the middle of nature. I think this is a pretty accurate description of the course, with much of the rough consisting of the natural sandy wastelands we Floridians have come to love.

The course is built on the highest point in the peninsula, 317 feet above sea level affording golfers a great view of Lake Apopka and off in the distance, the city of Orlando.

Sugarloaf Mountain

Playing the course is not so much a walk in the park as a walk through the woods or a ride through the woods as the situation dictates.  The course was built on an old tree farm and it conveys a sense of peace and connectivity with nature.  Driving the course is like a lazy drawn out roller coaster with many elevation changes as you play.

Below is the scorecard.  Being the golfing stud that I am, I elected to play from the Blues. :)

Sugarloaf Mountain Score Card

Our tee time for the round was at 7:10am.  I wanted an early tee time to beat the crowd and catch the early morning sun for the pictures.  Well, turns playing early is not the best time to play or at least it was not on that particular day.  Here’s the 1st hole as we saw it :)

Sugarloaf Mountain Hole 1

as opposed to this :)

Sugarloaf Mountain Hole 1 sans fog

But we are REAL golfers, not ones to be intimidated by a little bit of fog, so we played on.  We learned that playing in that heavy fog isn’t that bad, you can follow the trail left in the dew to your ball, assuming of course, your shots take you to the fairway! :)

Some of the fog photos turned out pretty good though.

Sugarloaf Mountain Hole 1

Here’s a shot from the tee box of Hole #2

Sugarloaf Mountain Hole 2

Sugarloaf Mountain Hole 2

Here’s my arch nemesis’s chip shot on the 2nd Hole

Sugarloaf Mountain Hole 2

Sugarloaf Mountain Hole 3

Everyone’s favorite lefty golfer.

Sugarloaf Mountain Hole 3

While playing in the fog was a cool experience, it does add a new level of difficulty to the game :)   Especially on the 4th hole, which features a blind tee shot.  For your information, there’s an “alleged” radio tower off in the distance you’re supposed to aim at, well, didn’t see it and of course our tee shots went in the wrong direction. :)

There’s another blind, the 13th hole on which you are supposed to aim right(??) of the water tower which we can confirm to be accurate.  :)   This was my 2nd favorite hole(and not only because I had such a beautiful tee shot and because of the slope the ball rolled an extra 30 yards).

Sugarloaf Mountain Hole 13 from the Tee

Sugarloaf Mountain Hole 13 from 200 yards

The 14th was my favorite.  It features a dog leg right with a natural conservation area all along the right hand side of the hole.

Sugarloaf Mountain Hole 14

You’ve got to play it smart on this hole, that stand alone oak tree down there is about 213 yards from the tee or at least, from the blues.

Sugarloaf Mountain Hole 14 from the 150 stick

This is the first time in my life I’ve ever seen a sign like this

Sugarloaf Mountain Hole 14 Natural Conservation Area

I came to the conclusion that I need to start taking pictures of the hole markers before I start taking pictures of the holes because I can’t remember all the holes to which the pictures belong.

The course was a real pleasure to play, overall it was very well maintained.

If I had to make some critiques, they’d be that there is no course layout on any of the scorecards and the hole markers are little more than wooden sticks in the ground with hole numbers carved into them.  Playing for the first time is a real challenge because you don’t have any idea how some of the holes play.  Sometimes the cart paths were a little hard to find (because most of the time they’re sand paths that blend in well with the rough :) ). Other than those two things, some of the greens on the back nine needed a little TLC.

The staff was really friendly and helpful, we didn’t get a chance to encounter the cart girl, either we were too early or she took the day off. :)

It’s a private club but currently they are allowing residents of the tri-county area to play.  Below are the rates.

Before 11am – $69.99
After 11 am – $59.99
After 2 pm – $49.99

Rates are good seven days a week.

Reading back over the post, I realize that there are ALOT of pictures, I won’t apoligize for it, it’s a really beautiful course and there were many great photo ops. :)

This Golf Blog gives Sugarloaf Mountain it’s stamp of approval. :)

Sooooo, if you are looking for a challenging, minimalist, totally different than what your used to round of golf, check this place out! :)

Orlando Area #424 Golf Club

Posted by Dave

Hey Guys!

If you are looking for a FREE golf club to join, Stracka.com has afforded it’s members the opportunity to do so.  They have local area golf clubs for pretty much all of the US.

These golf clubs, once approved provide their members with official USGA Handicaps.

I’ve been asked and accepted to be the chairman of the Orlando Area #424 Golf Club.  The club became USGA compliant yesterday.  Presently we’ve got 29 members and I’m looking to for more.

Since it’s a type 3 golf club, there are a couple of requirements that must be met.

-You must play at least three rounds a year with another member of the club and one of those rounds has to be in a club sponsored round.

-Each individual must provide proof of identification and residence to the golf club in order to be a member of the club.

-In order to be able to utilize the USGA Handicap System, the golf club must have group cohesion. Group activities should go beyond playing in tournaments. There should be a group orientation policy and other functions, such as group meetings, award banquets and the like.

-Contact information about each member of the golf club must be made readily available to all members.

I’m very excited about this!

So, if you want a free way to get an official USGA Handicap, feel free to sign up.  Stracka.com is a free golf website featuring tons of really cool stuff and they’re giving us all free handicaps!  If you do the math, free+free = AWESOME! :)

Happy Bunker

If you do sign up, send me a friend invite, here’s the link to my profile.

Happy Wednesday!

Happy Monday!

I found this tidbit on PGATOUR.com.  They’re listing from 1 to 100, the top players to watch in 2009.  Can you guess who #1 is? :)   Strangely his world rank and his placement are the same.

Top 100 Golfers to watch in 2009

Top Players in 2009

They break them down by regular season rank, playoffs rank and bonus money during 2008.

The top 10 were not all that surprising, except #10, I’d of put Jim Furyk instead of Ernie Els.

I thought this was pretty cool.

They rate each player’s skill in the above categories.  For my fellow fantasy golf aficionados,  here’s something that might help your scores, playing against me, your gonna need em! :)

Enjoy! :)
