Today is the 100th year anniversary of his death, which occurred when he fell down the stairs while going into wine cellar of the new St. Andrews course he designed. He was 84 at the time.

Old Tom Morris is the most influential figure in the early (pre-1900) history of golf. He was a great player, clubmaker, greenskeeper and course designer.

Old Tom Morris was one of the early adopters of the gutta percha ball, which vastly improved production time of golf balls and is the basis of the technology used in golf balls today.

He was also an extremely proficient golfer, first apprenticing under Alan Robertson and eventually becoming his equal.
